Green Phoenix Rising

Pine needles lay strewn
In a random fashion on the floor
Where the tree used to be
It wasn’t even a real tree
So why should it shed needles?
And why does the shedding seem
So final and ominous?

Remnants of a celebration
A presence now marked by absence
And loss even though the green
Power strip nestled against
The baseboard supports no appliance
Offers no utility and remains
Unilluminated, off… its curious
Fully grounded cord rising
Like a Phoenix dangling
Its three-sided head in silence
As if the slightest audible cue
Might expel its brassy prongs
From their preferred resting place

It is a symbol of sadness
Because I’m seeing what’s not
There rather than what will be
Let me grieve her going
As I anxiously anticipate her arrival

How else can I rejoice in her return?
Even her festive, some might say
Silly pajama bottoms haunt
Me as I step into the garage
To look for something
That was never really there
The green stain on the carpet
In her room may or may
Not come clean but now
I know in time

She will
