First Start

For an Unborn Child

This is the room
Where our child will sleep
Where alphabets will be digested
Alongside first teeth
Training wheels
And mercurochrome
This is the room
With the bright yellow face
Bracketed by baseboards
And trim done up
In the most radiant
Of cloud-powder whites

This is the room
Crayons and hopelessly lost
Lego blocks will soon call home
A haven for the small bugs
Books and best friends
A growing life requires

This is the room
Her mother and I have made
The place where love and light
Come together to speak
The warm sheltering language
Of perpetual belonging
Set against an ocean
Once so deep and blue
