The New Soft Shoe

In an article from today’s paper
We receive all sorts of statistics
On smart phones
As I peruse the numbers
I wonder – Who’s smart?
Us?  Or our phones?
The question is essential
To understanding the issue

The experts say we check our phones
On average
150 times a day
But we touch our phones
Over 2600 times a day!

Screens have been inserted
Where no screens ever were before!

Over lunch at McDonald’s
In dressing rooms when one
Is most exposed
In the back of taxi seats
En route anywhere

This is who we are:
Eyes glazed
Mouth open
Neck craned
Trapped in dopamine loops
Pressing the bar
Our attention sold to advertisers
Along with our data
And handed back to us
Tattered and piecemeal
Longing for that longitudinal sense
Of what we’re all about
