House of Games

When we think of drama, we rarely think of scams or fraud.  However, for David Mamet, the prospect of fleecing the frail and then fleeing is at the heart of his very ingenious screenplay and motion picture from 1987, House Of Games.  For Mamet, many of his narratives rely on a thinly veiled web of deception that often finds its structure inverted as the victims become the victors, or everybody ends up taking a bath.    In a way, the playwright seems to be saying that cons are a part of life and the winners usually have a fail-safe switch to abort or advance the enterprise, depending on its progress and the likelihood of its smooth and effortless completion.
